Before and After

On Friday, the construction guys came bright and early as usual and over the course of the day, they put up the main ceiling beams. They look just like I-beams, but made out of wood instead of steel. Jim, our contractor, told us that these beams are super strong and heavy duty, because the new roof is flat and will be a "snow trap."

Today they put most of the roof on, and sawzawed the existing outside wall where they will cut out a new door at the bottom of our stairs to go into our new bathroom. And sawzawed the outside wall where the back porch was attached to the kitchen because that wall will be completely opened up to our soon-to-be remodeled kitchen space.

The "shocking" news of the day for the workers: there was no insulation at all in the wall between our old back porch and the kitchen. Something we have known forever by process of elimination......in the winter, that wall radiates cold air each and every day. Especially when it is -20.

Meanwhile, the plumber has been here last week and today, replacing our water heater with a new one that vents through the outside wall, replacing the main sewer pipe and the horizontal pipe that goes to our existing bathroom, and updating many other ancient black steel pipes throughout our basement. He has also been busy plumbing our new bathroom and the new location for our washer and dryer (which will no longer be in the basement!)

Looks like truck central.....there's another one parked on the other side of the street behind the plumber's white van.

Before

After: this will eventually be a bathroom door.

Where did all these wires come from?!?!?!
